Post surgery we all are filled with lot of questions- what, when and how to eat? We have enlisted a few; we hope it proves to be helpful post recovery.

  • Fruits and vegetables: An ideal recommendation is of least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. It can be incorporated in balanced meals with nutritional snacks in the form of fruit custard or juice. Juicing is a good way of consuming fruits and vegetables in a day’s diet, especially for those who are not able to chew.
  • Drink lot of fluids; say about 10 cups of water a day. This will help u stay hydrated and also keep u away from many symptoms, such as fatigue, headache or nausea.
  • Caffeine is always on the top of line questions. Caffeine when consumed in moderation has shown no effects on surgery. Recommendation is of 2 cups a day.

High fiber food is preferred post surgery. High fiber cereals improve bowel function and help reduce heart disease risk. Good sources of fiber are whole cereals, pulses, beans, fruits and vegetables.

  • Post surgery avoiding fried food helps keep nausea and fatigue at bay. Adding moderate amounts of fats can help improve the caloric requirement.
  • Post surgery, in some cases fluctuation of blood sugars can be seen. Refined sugars should be avoided in favor of more nutritious foods.
  • Post surgery, you may have lean meat. It’s best to avoid red meat for it being a good source of saturated fats, can reduce the risk of cardiac and colon cancer.
  • Post surgery, loss of appetite is commonly experienced. – To overcome this you may experiment with spices and condiments to suit your pallet. Try and have small, frequent meals. For instance have coconut water, buttermilk, or lemon water t neutralize stomach and taste buds. Small snacks can be of fruit chaat, or curd based, roasted dry fruit (very small amounts),and seeds.
  • Weight loss occurred post surgery can be minimized by adequate dietary intake, use of between- meal snacks that are good source of calories, fat and proteins.
  • A balanced diet can help support the body’s immune/ repair system by producing new blood cells.
