Nutritional Anemia:  Anemia is the most common disorder of the blood. It affects about a quarter of people globally. It is more common in females than  males. It also affects the females during pregnancy.

Refractory Anemia: It is a type of anemia in which there is a lack of RBC/increased RBC breakdown (red blood cells) in the blood. The same requires blood transfusion and hematology interventions.

Thalassemia: It can be defined as a disorder caused by the reduced life span of of red blood cells. People with thalassemia make less hemoglobin and have fewer circulating red blood cells than normal, which results in mild or severe anemia. Thalassemia can cause significant complications, including iron overload, bone deformities and cardiovascular illness. The patients suffering from the same may require blood transfusion & medication on a regular basis. Certain patients may also require bone marrow transplant.

It is estimated that about 3.4% of our population is carrier of thalassemia (or suffering from minor thalassemia). Every year 7000-10,000 children with Thalassemia Major are born in India.

Haemophilia: Hemophilia is a rare disorder in which your blood doesn’t clot normally because it lacks sufficient blood-clotting proteins (clotting factors). Hemophilia is an inherited (genetic) disorder that has no cure however regular clotting factor infusions, medications & physical therapy can improve the life of a patient.

Leukemia: There are two types of leukemia- acute or chronic. Acute Leukemia (Acute Lymphoblastic or Acute Myeloid Leukemia) is life threatening. However with current management strategies majority of the patients can be cured. Chronic leukemia on the other hand occurs in elderly people can be cured by novel therapies.

Treatment for leukemia can be complex — depending on the type of leukemia and other factors. Treatment may involve some combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and bone marrow transplant, in addition to supportive care and palliative care as needed.

Multiple Myeloma: Multiple myeloma (also known as plasma cell myeloma or  Kahler’s disease is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell normally responsible for producing antibodies. In multiple myeloma, collections of abnormal plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow, where they interfere with the production of normal blood cells. Multiple myeloma is diagnosed with blood tests bone marrow examination, urine protein electrophoresis, and X-rays of commonly involved bones. With the current novel therapies along with bone marrow transplant majority of the patients now have improved survivals.
