Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the most challenging disorders of the mind and it takes many years for a patient to realize that he/she may be suffering from a disease which forces them to behave in a strange/ bizarre manner. The symptoms can be obsessive behavior related to cleanliness, odour in the house or control over life situations. OCD is characterized by obsessive thoughts and compulsive acts and since 21% of patients report onset before puberty, it can have a severe effect on personality development. WHO has listed OCD among the 10 medical illnesses most likely to cause disability!
The goals of OCD clinic headed by Dr Jyoti Kapoor, Consultant Psychiatry, is to work with patients and care givers of chronic OCD to develop integrated therapeutic environment to evaluate, treat and rehabilitate patients. The strategies include:
Clinical evaluation and identification of functional disability due to OCD
Periodic assessment of recovery using self rating tools
Cognitive behavior therapy for symptom reduction as well as enhancing self esteem, personality development and functioning
