What Causes High Blood Pressure in Pregnant Women

Blood pressure (BP) is read as a fraction of systolic blood pressure over the diastolic. High blood pressure (BP 140/90) is the most common medical complication of pregnancy. To determine what is normal for a lady we generally record the blood pressure at the first visit and carefully follow it through out the  pregnancy. Knowing about your blood pressure is important in pregnancy because high blood pressure in pregnancy (present prior to pregnancy/ developing later) needs to be controlled. Uncontrolled high blood pressure takes its toll on the mother as well as the baby.pregnancyhttps://www.parashospitals.com/parasbliss/our-specialities/obstetrics/. High Blood Pressure in Pregnancy can be Categorised into:

  • Chronic hypertension
  • Gestational hypertension
  • Pre eclampsia / eclampsia
  • Pre eclampsia superimposed on chronic hypertension

Causes of Hypertension Prior To Pregnancy:

No apparent reason is found in cases of essential hypertension. Secondary hypertension can be due to problems in the kidneys, endocrinal disorders, or problems like constriction of the major blood vessel (aorta).

Causes of High Blood Pressure In Pregnancy:

These are unique to pregnancy and usually subside when the pregnancy is terminated / after few weeks of delivery. Let us see these causes one by one.

  • First pregnancy poses a higher risk of development of high BP.
  • Multiple pregnancy(twins/ triplets) poses an additional burden  on the mothers  body and hence there is a higher chance of high BP
  • If there is a family history of high BP/ blood pressure in previous pregnancy you may develop the same in the next pregnancy also.
  • Elderly mother (more than 40 yrs of age) stands a higher chance of complications of pregnancy including hypertension.
  • It is often seen in pregnancy from an IVF(test tube baby) procedure.
  • Unhealthy lifestyle/ obese/ overweight will increase your chance of the same.
  • Smokers/ alcohol abuse have at high risk for this complication.

Thus we see that pregnancy will bring about hormonal changes as well as physical and psychological changes in your body and some of these changes may lead to high BP. Nevertheless some factors can be modified and complications of BP may be minimised. So take healthy diet add a physical excersise routine as well as stress reduction techniques. Last but not the least let the doctor decide what is best for you!
