Tips for a normal delivery

What is a normal delivery?

Normal delivery is a natural way of bringing the baby into this world. It is not difficult to have a natural and normal child birth; unless you have some medical conditions. More over the natural birth process helps in having a healthy baby and recovering quickly for the new mom. Though there is no defined biological process to have a normal delivery, some measures can improve the chances of having a healthy and natural delivery.

Here are few tips for a normal delivery:

  1. It is normal to feel stressful during pregnancy. But try to avoid stress, anxiety and random thoughts, because negative emotions can severely affect child’s growth.
  • Try meditation that helps you feel comfortable
  • Read books, listen to music and involve in visualisation technique
  • Talk to positive people and avoid negative conversations
  • Avoid negative situations

2.  Acquire knowledge about birthing.

Knowledge is power, acquire as much knowledge as possible about labour and delivery process.

  • Get all your doubts about pregnancy and childbirth cleared by your doctor. Read books about child birth.
  • Talk to your mother or other elderly women in the family who can help you with their experience.
  •  Take information on natural techniques such as relaxation, breathing etc.
  •  Enrol in prenatal classes

3. Build a strong support system

Have enough emotional support. Have your partner, mother and close friends around you; they are there to boost your confidence. Make sure your partner is with you. Your family will stand by your side, but if you have any different view or ideas about pregnancy, do share with them.

4. Choose your doctor wisely

As many doctors look for convenience and opt for C-section, so it is important to choose a doctor who will consider the C-section as a last resort and deliver your baby normally. Make sure your doctor and clinic have a good rate of normal delivery and talk to your doctor about their views on normal delivery.

5. Perineal massages

You can start doing perineal massages once you enter the seventh month. It helps you deal with labour and manage stress too.

6. Stay hydrated

Water is vital for your health, more so now that you are pregnant. Labour is hard to the body and you will need extra water to stay hydrated. Your body gets a lot of stamina and energy with water. You will need less of intravenous fluids if you consume adequate amount of water.

7. Use water

Apart from drinking water, you can make the labour process easier. Hydrotherapy can help beat the stress and reduce discomfort and pain during labour. Fill the bathtub with water and sit in it for relief. Keep the temperature of the water normal to avoid any harm to your body.

8. Keep a watch on your posture

Keep your body aligned so that the baby can glide smoothly. Standing and sitting for long periods, sleeping in awkward position, wearing high heels tight belts can misalign your body.

  • Sit with a proper support to your back. There would be added pressure on your spine during pregnancy.
  •  Sit with folded legs as hanging them for too long can lead to swelling.
  •  Do not slouch while sitting or standing.

 9. Not to put on excess weight

It is important to achieve a decent amount of weight during pregnancy but you don’t need to pile up on the pounds. Overweight women can have problems during labour obesity can make it difficult to monitor the baby during labour making normal delivery difficult. Your diet plays an important role in keeping you healthy, thus making a way for the natural birth.

10. Eat right

A healthy mother means a healthy baby.

  • Your diet should consist of healthy dose of fruits, vegetables, lean meat, legumes and dairy.
  •  Choose dark green vegetables, a good amount of starchy food and foods that are rich are in protein.Your body needs extra iron during pregnancy, so make sure you eat iron rich food.
  •  Avoid food that contains retinol. Consume sea food in moderate amount.
  •  Avoid eating street food which can have bacteria and harm your health.
  •  Reduce intake of sugar.
  •  Take bromelain rich food. Bromelain is an enzyme that can stimulate the labour and soften the cervix. Foods such as mango, pineapple and papaya are rich in bromelain.
  • Do not consume these fruits in excess as you may go into premature labour.
  •  Spicy food can make your body warmer and encourage a normal delivery.

 11. Avoid hospital beds

It is usual that women sometimes feel that they are going into labour but after reaching hospital. It is realized that pain was false. In such cases, avoid staying in the hospital unnecessarily. Return back home, unless recommended by your doctor. Go to hospital when there are stronger pains.

12. Let the baby choose the due date

Due dates which are told by ultrasound are off by one week or more. So just go natural and let the baby choose its birthday.

13. Sleep adequately

Getting a good sleep is essential for healthy growth of the baby. It also keeps you calm.

14. Walking

Always keep moving. Walking is the best exercise for anyone especially pregnant women. A 30- minute walk five times a week will keep you healthy. Walking once in a while is not adequate to bring a change. It has to be regular walk for half an hour daily. It will facilitate the side-ways movement of your hips which help your baby to position itself in the right spot for normal delivery.

Pregnancy exercises for normal delivery

Do not exercise without informing your doctor. Your doctor is the best person to guide you regarding the type of exercises that could suit your body.

Breathing exercises

Breathing is something you don’t even notice. But it is one thing that makes the whole labour process easier. You can talk to your doctor about this.

Prenatal yoga

Yoga is a great way for a healthier body. It will ease out your delivery.

  • Yoga is all about breathing right. This can be of great help during labour and delivery.
  •  Take prenatal yoga classes from a specialist (Physiotherapist) so that it is safe for you and your baby.
