Doctors now have advised women to get their breasts checked in their 20s for any sign and symptoms of cancer. It is seen that the most common reason for discharge or any other changes in breasts usually happens during pregnancy. Discharge from nipples can occur because of many other reasons, many of which are harmless and can be treated easily. In case you are not sure about your breast discharge you should definitely consult your doctor for further investigation.

In case you are pregnant then it is likely that the discharge occurs is milky and comes from both the nipples. During pregnancy, your breast starts to produce milk from second trimester itself, when you are in 14 to 16 weeks pregnant. Sometimes your breast produces milk up to two years even after when you stop breast to your child. In case you are pregnant, you should definitely consult a doctor or you should undergo urine routine pregnancy test at home itself.

If there is no pregnancy but still you are having breasts discharge then following can be possible reasons:

  • Duct ectasia: There is discharge in the form of discoloured or cheesy from both the breasts, which is harmless as that is the breast related change that occurs.
  • Duct papilloma: Sometimes there is blood strained discharge that occurs from one breast. This happens due to a harmless growth that occurs inside your breast duct.
  • Breast or nipple abscess: Sometimes there is a bacterial infection which results due to the collection of painful pus which is formed in the around the nipple or breast tissue.

Sometimes discharge usually occurs as a common temporary side effect of using contraceptive pills. You should definitely visit your doctor for breast examination and nipple discharge problem. Chances of breast cancer are unlikely to occur but need to be ruled out especially if you are having a breast lump, age above 40 years if only one breast is affected or your discharge contains blood.
