Brain Aneurysm Surgery
This brain surgery includes the repair of any brain haemorrhage that may be caused due to a sudden increase in the brain pressure. Due to the haemorrhage the weak vessel walls in the bran develop a bulge or a balloon. This formation can rupture/burst causing bleeding in the area around the brain. This is called a subarachnoid hemorrhage. If this bulge is left untreated the same can result in stroke or brain damage. Treatment of the bulge includes surgery.
Symptoms of Brain Aneurysm
- Headache and nausea
- Droopy eyes
- Seizures Imapired speech
- Double vision
- Numbness and weakness in the muscles
If the size of the brain aneurysm is less than 3 mm then the same is less likely to burst and cause damage.
How is a Brain aneurysm surgery perfomed?
There are several ways through which the surgery is performed
- Clipping: This is the most common and includes an incision in the scalp followed by a small hole in the skull. A metal clip is placed in the base of the aneurysm to prevent it from rupturing.
- Endovascular Repair: This includes incisions in the groin and in the artery. A small wire through the groin and the artery leads to the aneurysm. The surgeon installs thin metal wires in the aneurysm. The wire coils in the form of a ball and develops a blood clot preventing the aneurysm from rupturing.
- cPAX: In this procedure a permanent stent is placed in the aneurysm to prevent it from rupturing.
