CO2 Laser or Carbon Dioxide laser is a treatment that is used to treat skin irregularities, like acne scars, wrinkles, etc. This technique is usually employed in skin resurfacing. The effects of CO2 laser are similar to the results of dermabrasion and chemical peels. The only difference with CO2 laser is that it removes skin layers by vaporization and not with chemicals or a sanding device like in chemical peels and dermabrasion. Short and concentrated pulsating beams of laser are targeted at irregular skin, removing it layer by layer.
What is CO2 Laser used for?
The CO2 laser can be used on the entire face or specific areas to treat –
- Sun damage
- Blotchiness or age spots
- Precancerous growths (Actinic keratosis)
- Scars from acne
- Surgical or traumatic scars
CO2 laser can be used to improve skin texture, wrinkles, and blotchiness on arms and legs, neck and chest. It can also be used on the delicate areas, such as eyelid skin and around the mouth.
How the CO2 Laser works?
CO2 laser is an outpatient procedure that can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours depending upon the area to be treated. For small areas, the areas to be treated are made numb with local anesthesia. General anesthesia is administered if the whole face has to be treated.
The dermatologist or plastic surgeon determines the amount of laser energy that has to be used on the skin’s surface and also the depth of penetration.
