Diskectomy is a surgery undertaken for the removal of the worn out cushion disk in the spine. When the tough exterior of the spinal disc undergoes degeneration, the inner softer central material gets forced through the weak part leading to a herniated disk or slipped disc. These disks are responsible for the spacing between the vertebrae and for cushioning the column. A herniated disk is mostly seen in the older population since the degeneration of the spinal disk might come about with age. However, vigorous activities could also be responsible for them.
When is it done?
When a herniated disk occurs, the nucleus pulposus, or the central cushion part of the spinal disk pushes on the exterior. This causes pain due to stressed spinal cord or radiating nerves. The herniated disks can lead to weakness in the leg and lower back and/or pain in the leg, numbness in the thighs, legs or lower back region, severe pain in the neck. The pains could be mild to severe. They could again be constant or occur at intervals. Herniated disk could also cause paralysis. All these are the situations when a diskectomymay be required.
The side effects can be:
- Allergy to the medication
- Nerve damage
Once the treatment is done, the patient has to take special care to avoid any activity that could stress their back or leg. Lifting weights or heavy exercises are to be completely avoided for a period of time that is advised by the doctor. Since diskectomy does not permanently cure the reasons leading to herniated disk, care must be taken to avoid getting injured again.
