Pvp (Photoselective Vaporization of Prostate)
Photoselective Vaporization of Prostate is a minimally invasive procedure that treats an enlarged prostate, a condition termed as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Unlike conventional surgery options for treating enlarged prostate, laser PVP surgery provides a treatment without cutting or scraping tissue. Being a laser procedure, there is less blood loss, making laser PVP surgery a good option for men who have blood-clotting problems.
PVP procedure uses laser to vaporize or burn away excess tissue in the prostate that is blocking the urine flow. Like other minimally invasive treatments, PVP leads to faster relief and recovery as compared to the invasive prostate surgery.
Who can opt for Photoselective Vaporization of Prostate?
Enlarged prostate patients with conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer, having moderate to severe symptoms for whom the invasive treatments are not recommended, can get a PVP done.
How is PVP done?
PVP is an outpatient procedure that needs to be performed at either an outpatient surgical facility, or at a hospital. The procedure is performed to remove all excess tissue from the prostate and urethra that stops the urine flow. PVP takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
At the start of the procedure, the patient is given an anesthetic to numb the prostate region. A cystoscope with a laser fiber is used for the PVP. Cytoscope is a tube with a tiny camera at the end which relays images to a video monitor. This display is used to guide the tube through the urethra to the prostate. The laser fiber is positioned close to the patient’s urethra and laser is used to vaporize the excess prostate tissue.
