Here is a list of basic tests that a woman should undergo to detect disease at the earliest These tests are called screening tests with an aim to prevent disease .
Blood Sugar Test – It should tested every year or more frequently if there are certain risks factors.It will detect diabetes at earliest.
Blood Pressure Check Test – It should be checked every 6 months.
BMI Test – The Body mass index is calculated from measuring height and weight. Ideal BMI ranges between 18- 25.Below 18 means underweight and above 25 means over weight. BMI above 30 reflects obesity; the latter can lead to several lifestyle disease-Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Disease and Stroke.
Blood Cholesterol Profile Test – This simple blood test can save your life .A high cholesterol level can lead to heart attack or strokes that can claim a life every 40 seconds.If high cholesterol is detected, protect yourself by changing your diet, lifestyle and taking medications such as statins.
PAP Smear Test for Cervical Cancer- It should be done in all sexually active women who are above 21 years of age. You should have the same every 3 years till the age of 55-60 years. It can detect cervical cancer in its premalignant stage and it can can protect the women from this deadly cancer.
Breast Examination and Mammograms- Breast cancer is the commonest cancer in women .Manual self examination of breast at home is recommended for all women. And for women who are above 40 years of age routine mammogram annually is a must to detect any breast lump or any abnormality. This test cannot be avoided especially if you have any family history of cancer , or any cancer.
Osteoporosis- All women over the age of 50 years should have a bone density test (DEXA SCAN).If bone density is less,than consult a doctor and take calcium supplementation.
Protecting your eyes- Get your eyes checked –up regularly every 2 years. These tests are to check for common problems like Presbyopia, Glaucoma, Catract and macular degeneration. Eye check –ups should be more frequent if you have vision problems or any risk factors for eye.
Colon Cancer Screening – If you have a strong family history of colon cancer or polyps or inflammatory bowel disease ,then you must opt for a screening test for occult blood in stool every year. Colonoscopy every 10 years is recommended .
