This is a skin disorder where the skin loses its normal color in blotches. The extent, as well as the rate of color loss due to this disease, cannot be predicted. It can be any part of your body where you can have this issue. Your hair and the inner part of the mouth can be affected because of Vitiligo too.
Melanin determines the color of your hair and skin. Vitiligo happens when melanin producing cells die or stop performing their natural tasks inside the body. It is not at all contagious or fatal but can be very annoying, and people feel frustrated because it can change their appearance and look.
Sign and Symptoms
The most common signs include:
- Patchy loss of skin color in the areas that are directly exposed to the sun
- Premature whitening of the hair on scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard
- Loss of the color of the tissues that line the inner part of your nose or mouth
- Loss or change of the color of your retina
Causes and Risks
When the pigment-producing cells of your body stop working or die because of some reasons, then you can have Vitiligo. Pigments give colors to your hair, eyes, and skin. The reasons for the death of those cells are not known yet.
Treatment and Management
Diverse treatments are available to restore the lost skin color. However, the results vary and can be unpredictable. You should try the treatment on the smaller part of your skin to see if it suits you or not.
