Skull Base Surgery

Skull Base Surgery

A skull base surgery is performed for the removal of abnormal growths or tumors, benign and/or cancerous, occurring in the skull base which is the floor in the cranial cavity separating the brain from the eye sockets, nasal cavity, ear canals and the neck. Skull base surgeries are complex and challenging and are carried out by ENT surgeons or neurosurgeons. These surgeries include endoscopic procedures which involves the insertion of the instruments through natural openings like nose or mouth or through a miniature hole along the eyebrows.

The skull base surgery is to be carried out in the following cases:

  • Growths resulting from infections
  • Cerebrospinal fluid fistulas
  • Chordomas
  • Carniosynostosis
  • Pituitary tumors
  • Cerebral aneurysm

The symptoms in skull base outgrowths differ with respect to their size, location and type and can involve:

  • Loss of hearing or ringing effect in the ear
  • Blockage of the nasal area
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Issues with sight
  • Facial discomfort or ache

Basically there are two types of skull base surgery, and they are: –

Invasive Endoscopic method – After the radiologists have performed an MRI of the brain, the surgeons with the help of an endoscope examine and treat the outgrowth in the skull base. An endoscope is a flexible tube like instrument that consists of a light source, a lens, an eye piece and an additional channel for the passage of another medical instrument.

This is an older approach where in an incision is made in the facial or in the skull region and might require the removal of bone parts to get access to the outgrowth.

A skull base surgery can be strenuous and requires frequent examinations and routine checkups to ensure that no more outgrowths have cropped up.
