Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is a procedure used to improve the appearance of the eyelids. The surgery can be performed to either remove skin and to add or remove excess fat from the eyelids. This surgery can be performed on one of the eyelids, or both.
As a person ages, the eyelids stretch, and the supporting muscles also become weak. As a result, excess fat may get deposited around the eyelids, causing droopy upper eyelids, sagging eyebrows, and swelling under the eyes. Blepharoplasty is a treatment for droopy eyelids which involves removing the sagging skin that blocks the vision.
Why is Blepharoplasty done?
Blepharoplasty is done to: –
- Remove excess fat deposits that lead to puffiness in the eyelids
- Treat loose or sagging skin on upper eyelids that can sometimes block vision
- Bags under the eyes
- Drooping lower eyelids
- Excess skin on the lower eyelids
What happens during the procedure?
Blepharoplasty is usually carried out in an outpatient setting. The procedure usually takes around two hours. At the start of the surgery a medication is injected into the eyelids and intravenous medication is given. This may make the patient sleepy.
If the surgery has to be performed on both upper and lower eyelids, the surgeon starts with the upper eyelid first. An incision is made along the fold of the eyelid to remove excess skin and fat. On the lower lid, a cut is made just below the lashes to remove excess fat or saggy skin. After removal, the incision is stitched to close it.
