Cholesterol Test
A complete cholesterol test is also referred as Lipid Panel or Lipid Profile test. Cholesterol test is performed to identify risk probability of the plaques buildup in arteries which can later lead to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout body (atherosclerosis). If the cholesterol level is detected high then there is higher risk of heart diseases. Generally there is no bodily symptom of high cholesterol, and it can only be detected by doing cholesterol test.
A complete cholesterol test includes four different types of fats (lipids) in a person’s blood, which are
- Total cholesterol, which is a total of blood’s cholesterol content.
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which is also known as “good” cholesterol for it carry away LDL cholesterol and keeps arteries open due to which blood flows freely.
- Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is the “bad” cholesterol. If there is high LDL rate then that can lead to buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in arteries (atherosclerosis), which reduces blood flow.
- Triglycerides are a type of fat in the blood. It is the extra calories that body does not need so it stores it in the form of fat cells. High triglyceride levels are due factors like obesity, too much of sugar intake, drinking alcohol, smoking, or diabetes.
