Coronary angiogram is an X-ray of the heart performed to see how blood flows through the arteries of the heart. The procedure uses a special dye and x-rays to find the location and severity of blockage and narrowing in the arteries of heart. An angiogram is a test to determine the path of required treatment such as medication, angioplasty, or coronary bypass surgery.
During a coronary angiogram, a special type of dye that can be tracked by an X-ray machine is injected into the heart blood vessels. The X-ray machine then takes a series of images, known as angiograms, which details the inside of the blood vessels. This procedure require several hours.
Coronary angiography may be done in the following cases
- Aortic stenosis
- Abnormal chest pain
- Before undergoing cardiac surgery
- Heart failure and heart attack
What are the results of a coronary angiogram?
When the results are normal it means that the blood supply in the heart is normal. An abnormal result may mean a blocked or a narrowed artery. The test shows the blocked coronary arteries, the region of blockage, and its severity.
