Disc Replacement Surgery
A disk replacement is a surgical procedure that involves replacing a worn or damaged disk in the lower part of the spine with an artificial disk. The artificial disk is artificially synthesized from medical-grade metal or a combination of medical-grade metal and plastic.
Disc replacement is a new procedure and the goal of this surgical procedure is to alleviate back pain. It is generally an alternative to the spinal fusion surgery in which two vertebrae are joined together. Disk replacement is a major surgery that is carried out under general anesthesia and the patient is required to stay for about 2-4 days in the hospital.
Why is Disc Replacement Surgery performed?
Usually pain in the lumbar region of the spine is relieved through non-operative procedures. But certain chronic cases may require a disk replacement surgery.
Lumbar disk replacement surgery might be required when –
- The back pain source is 1 or 2 disks in the spine
- The patient has no significant joint disease or nerve compression
- He hasn’t previously undergone a spinal surgery
- The patient is not too overweight
- He does not have any spinal deformity
How is the procedure done?
At the start, the patient is placed under general anesthesia. Then an incision is made in the abdomen to access the spine. The surgeon will then remove the damaged lumbar disk or disks. After removal, artificial disk is inserted in its place. The incision will then be stitched and the patient will be required to stay in the hospital for 2-4 days for monitoring.
