Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia refers to the swelling of the breast tissue in men. It is caused by an imbalance in the hormones, testosterone and estrogen. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, and it can be uneven as well. Though other causes do exist, newborns, boys who are going through puberty and older men may develop this condition mostly because of normal hormonal changes.Gynecomastia is not generally a serious problem, but coping with it may be rather tough. Gynecomastia may also cause some pain in the breasts, not to mention it is a rather embarrassing situation as well. At times, gynecomastia may go away by itself however, if it persists, surgery or medication may help.
Treatment
Mostly, gynecomastia regresses over time without the need for treatment. But if the gynecomastia has been caused by some underlying condition like cirrhosis or malnutrition, the patient might require treatment. Sometimes, medication that you are taking may also lead to gynecomastia, in which case your doctor will have to stop or replace those medicines.
In adolescent patients who show no cause for the condition, periodic evaluations are required. Treatment may prove to be necessary in case the condition causes significant pain or tenderness.
Medication
Medication that is used to treat breast cancer may prove beneficial in treatinggynecomastia in some men.
Surgery
If significant breast enlargements persist despite treatments, there are two gynecomastia surgery options:
- Liposuction: Removes breast fat, but not the breast gland tissue
- Mastectomy:To remove the breast gland tissue, often done endoscopically
