Rheumatoid Factor
Rheumatoid Factor is the autoantibody found within the blood of a rheumatoid arthritis patient. The test done to detect the amount of rheumatoid factor in a person’s blood is called the rheumatoid factor test. Unlike an antibody also known as an immunoglobulin, a proteinwhich kills pathogens and provides immunity to the body from diseases, a rheumatoid factor harms the healthy tissues of the body.
What can the presence of Rh factor mean?
A Rheumatoid Factor test helps detect the presence of autoimmunity or autoimmune diseases in a patient. Although a rheumatoid factor test is generally associated with rheumatoid arthritis, Rh factor levels could also increase in the following cases:
Sjögren’s syndrome
It is an autoimmune disease which persists for a long duration and results in dryness of the eyes, nose, skin, vagina, blood vessels, lungs, kidneys and so on. It can damage many vital organs of the body.
Parvovirus infection
It is suffered by both children and adults though in case of the latter it appears to be more serious. In case of children this infection gives the appearance of slapped cheeks, while in adults it can cause joint ache lasting for a long time.
Epstein Barr Virus infection
Not all infections by the Epstein Barr virus may be serious but in a few cases it causes mononucleosis. This virus remains in the body for life and can get reactivated any time. It spreads through activities leading to an exchange of saliva.
Systemic Scleroderma
It is an autoimmune disease affecting the connective tissue and can advance to the lungs, heart, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract.
Primary biliary Cirrhosis
It is an autoimmune disease affecting the liver.
Leukemia
It is a cancer of the blood cells.
