Scoliosis Surgery
A scoliosis surgery is a surgery that is carried out for the treatment of scoliosis which is a medical condition involving severe abnormal curvature of the spines. The procedure involves the attachment of rods to the spine along with spinal fusion. A curved spine cannot be set completely straight but a spinal fusion helps reduce the curve to a great extent along with stabilizing it.
Why is it done?
Generally there’s another treatment available for scoliosis surgery which is bracing, and is advised for both children and adults. However, a surgery gets recommended when:
- Bracing fails to treat the curve
- A spinal curve affects general physiological functions like breathing
- It greatly mars the posture
- The curve shows characteristics of getting worse
What does it involve?
A scoliosis surgery has two approaches and they are anterior and posterior. The surgery requires an incision to be made on the patient’s body, which in the anterior approach is made on the chest wall and in the posterior approach is made on the patient’s back.
Anterior Approach
The anterior approach involves the making of an incision and the removal of a rib. After gainingaccess to the thoracic and lumbar regions of spines, by releasing the diaphragm from the chest wall and the spine, the spine is loosened up by removing the discs. After that, rods are inserted into the vertebral column and fixed with screws. Then, to allow spinal fusion, a bone from either the patient’s own body or that of someone else’s is added.
Posterior Approach
An incision on the back of the spine is made, and the muscles and tissues are moved aside. The rest of the process involves the insertion of rods and spinal fusion just as above.
The spines might take anywhere from 3months to an year to fuse.
