Spinal Decompression
Spinal decompression is a non-surgical therapy that is performed to relieve back pain and leg pain. The procedure involves stretching the spine, using a traction table or a similar motorized device. Both traction and decompression therapy are done with the aim to relieve pain and promote healing for bulging, degenerating, or herniated discs.
Spinal decompression helps change the force and position of the spine, and that helps to take the pressure off the spinal discs. In spinal decompression therapy, the spine is stretched and relaxed recurrently to create a negative intradiscal pressure on the spine.
This intradiscal pressure has two potential benefits:
- The herniated or bulging disc material can be pulled back into the disc
- Promotes the passage of healing nutrients into the disc to ensure better healing
Why is Spinal Decompression performed?
- Back, leg or neck pain or sciatica
- Diseased or injured spinal nerve roots
- Bulging or herniated discs
- Worn spinal joints (posterior facet syndrome)
Who should not go for a Spinal Decompression?
People with the following conditions should not get this therapy done –
- Metal implants in the spine
- Fracture
- Tumor
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm
- Advanced osteoporosis
How is Spinal Decompression performed?
During spinal decompression therapy, the patient has to lie on a motorized table. After that, a harness is placed around the hips of the patient which is attached to the lower table near the feet. The upper part of the table remains in a fixed position while the lower part moves. The patient is made to slide back and forth, to provide both traction and relaxation.
