Spinal Stenosis Treatment
Spinal Stenosis refers to the compression or narrowing of the spinal canal anywhere in the spine. This narrowing of the spinal canal stresses the spinal cord and/or nerves causing pain. This problem mostly occurs in adults above the age group of 50 years as it generally occurs due to degeneration resulting from age. However, there are cases where children are born with a narrow spinal cord, making the ailment persistent in them right from birth. The treatment undertaken as a remedy from Spinal Stenosis is Spinal Stenosis Treatment. It includes:
Non – operative
Exercises
Though exercises are not known to help a lot, yet there are various physical activities or therapies that a doctor may suggest to help a patient grow tolerance and strength. Activities that might worsen their conditions are to be strictly avoided. Patients are supposed to avoid walking upright and are suggested to bend while walking and go for recliners for sitting instead of a straight back-chair. Inactivity could cause muscle weakness.
Medications
The medications generally include anti-depressants, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory drugs and so on. Such medications are prescribed to help relieve the pain and/or inflammation that results from spinal narrowing.
Epidural injections
Corticosteroid injections are known to dismiss pain and swelling however, long term use can lead to weakening of nearby bones and tissues, and hence are restricted for certain patients.
Operative/Surgery
When the above mentioned treatments fail to be of help, a surgery has to be brought into consideration.
- Laminectomy – The surgical procedure involving the removal of the lamina in the vertebral column is known as laminectomy.
- Laminotomy –It involves the partial removal of the lamina.
- Laminoplasty – This procdure involves the creation of a hinge on the lamina to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord.
