Gurgaon, 8^thJune 2018: Furthering its commitment to people fighting neurological diseases, Paras Hospital Gurgaon will launch a support group for brain tumor patients treated at the hospital on Brain Tumor Day. The support group ‘JEET’ will be launched by Dr. (Prof.) V. S. Mehta, Chairman, Neurosciences, Paras Hospital Gurgaon.

“The support group will assist the patients in sustenance and motivating them for a better life. It will also offer guidance and counseling to support treatment and caregiver training for patient rehabilitation,” says Dr. (Prof.) V. S. Mehta, Chairman, Neurosciences, Paras Hospital Gurgaon. The group will provide free consultation to brain tumor patients on 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

“A family history of Glioma or exposure to ionizing radiation at any point in time could increase the risk. There are several treatment options available for brain tumor in India. However, the condition of patients after the treatment is something we should focus on. Our aim is to build a support system for brain tumor patients to bring them back to the flow of daily life,” says Dr. (Prof.) Mehta, one of the pioneers of brain stem surgery in India.

Cases of Brain Tumor are increasing however, more cases of brain tumors have surfaced due to advances in medical sciences and diagnostics, which have enabled correct diagnosis. Earlier possible cases of brain tumors would go undiagnosed because medical sciences had not advanced enough. Now, if symptoms, such as frequent episodes of headache and vomiting, vision deterioration, and other symptoms like endocranial disturbances, cranial nerve palsy etc, are observed, the patient can undergo MRI to confirm or rule out a case of brain tumor. For instance, a tumor formation in the speech area will affect speech, one near the motor area will affect the motor functioning of the patient.

 Broadly symptoms of brain tumor can be divided in four parts, one depending upon the location of tumor in the brain, second being tumors causing intracranial pressure symptoms due to occupying space in the brain, the third being ones causing epilepsy or fits and the fourth one tumors coming from pituitary area causing hormonal imbalances. Tumors can be cancerous or benign. Tumors arising from glial cells of the brain are cancerous and tumors arising from the covering of brain or cranial nerve or pituitary gland are usually noncancerous tumors and are slow growing in nature.

 Depending upon the case various treatment methods are employed, includes surgery for benign lesion and followed by radiosurgery, if required and chemotherapy. Treatment of brain tumors are highly complex as any inaccuracy may damage another part of the brain. Therefore, a dedicated neurosurgery team, assisted by neurointerventionist, neuroradiologists, neuroanaesthetists, with best of the infrastructure and advanced technology, is required to perform such surgeries. It feels great to be a part a team which treated numerous complex tumors together.

Today with these advances and technologies the surgical result have improved significantly and comparable to any other surgery in body. So people should not fear from the brain surgery. If they come on time, all surgeries have excellent result.
