Before you realise that you are pregnant, the body gives enough signals to indicate that you are pregnant. It is important that you follow them to know that you may be expecting. A number of women realise later and become too engrossed in their every day routine to notice any change. Follow the given aspects to know the signs and symptoms of pregnancy:

  • Missed period- It is the first indicator of pregnancy. You should make a menstrual diary so that you are aware that period is missed. If you have a regular cycle, this sign cannot be missed but if due to hormonal disorder or PCOS your periods are irregular, do a home pregnancy test when you miss period.
  • Morning sickness- Nausea, dizziness and fatigue are age old signs that many people know to be indicative towards a possible pregnancy. This is because of the high levels of the hormone progesterone being produced in the body. Sleepiness, increased sensitivity to odours also happens during pregnancy.

  • Cravings- Craving for certain foods which you might not have eaten in ages or aversion to certain tastes and smells can be pointing towards pregnancy. This is because of the imbalance in diet and you crave for the food group your body is deficient in.
  • Mastalgia or breast pain- Breasts become tender, swollen and sensitive. There maybe a pricking or tingling sensation in the breasts. Darkening of nipples and navel area, chloasma of cheeks can occur. This is due to the hormonal changes and fluid retention in breasts. You may need a better support and frequent change of size of your garments.
  • Frequency of urine- The enlarging uterus impinges on the bladder and hinders the storage capacity causing increased frequency of urination in early pregnancy. But urine culture to rule out infection must be done if other symptoms like burning, fever, pain, discolouration of urine are associated.
  • Vaginal discharge- Increased vaginal discharge is a protective mechanism in pregnancy to prevent infections. This is transparent, non irritating in nature. If foul smelling, itching or discoloured, consult the doctor.
  • Mood swings- Surge of a cocktail of hormones in your body puts you on a rollercoaster ride causing abrupt mood swings which can cause you and your family lot of distress. Heightened emotions like ecstasy, extreme happiness, surprise or sometimes anxiety and depression may crop up.
  • Bloating of abdomen- This is also due to the naughty hormones playing havoc inside your body.
  • Light bleeding or spotting- If your period is earlier than expected or very light with spotting only, you could be pregnant. Implantation bleed, ectopic pregnancy and threatened miscarriage cause spotting. So do a pregnancy test if you feel that the period is altered either early or late, light or heavy bleed.
  • Miscellaneous- Headache, backache, cramping, constipation are other symptoms which are caused during pregnancy due to various alterations in body.

If you suspect that you might be pregnant, go for the home pregnancy test which is very simple and cheap done with the morning sample of urine or head towards your gynecologist for confirmation. If negative, repeat the test after few days. As soon as you see the two pink lines…..congratulations!
