A woman can go through numerous types of vaginal problems related to periods, yeast infections, sex, birth control methods and urinary tract infections, just to name a few. Apart from these, there can be a number of problems varying from discharge to lumps or unexplained pain that may lead to a lot of discomforts. There are six important vaginal problems that every woman should be aware of.

  1. Vaginitis – It is characterized by vaginal discharge and itching. It usually occurs when the balance between the good and the bad bacteria in the vagina is disturbed. You should consult your gynecologist if the discharge is foul-smelling or bloodstained.
  2. Vulvodynia – It is characterized by a chronic, long-lasting pain in the area surrounding the vagina that is not caused by an infection, skin disease or other medical condition. It affects around 15-20% of sexually active women. There can be burning, itching, sharp stabbing pain or discomfort. One should consult your gynecologist to rule any infection which may also cause such symptoms.
  3. Lump (Bartholin cysts) – There are glands known as Bartholin glands on both sides of the vaginal lips which secrete a lubricating fluid. The problem occurs when they get blocked and fluid begins to collect thus presenting as a swelling or lump. At times it grows very rapidly and becomes painful due to infection. You must consult your doctor immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.
  4. Imperforate Hymen – It is a congenital disorder in which the hymen completely blocks the vagina and does not allow menstrual blood to flow out. It is mostly diagnosed in adolescent girls who have cyclic pelvic pain and amenorrhea. The menstrual blood may get collected in the vagina and at times in the uterus also. A simple surgical procedure solves this problem.
  5. Vulvar VaricosityYou may notice bulging blue veins in vulva (area surrounding the vagina) or feeling of fullness or pressure. They are very common in pregnancy. Prolonged standing also aggravates the problem. Avoiding prolonged standing, swimming and cold compresses help in relieving the symptoms.
