Almost everyone has abdominal pain and bloating at some point of their life. It is usually not serious and easily treatable, but sometimes it may indicate towards some serious issue.

  • Indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Stomach infection
  • Acidity
  • PID( pelvic infection)
  • Hernia
  • Gas
  • Food poisoning
  • Gall stones
  • Kidney stones
  • Urinary infection
  • Appendicitis
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Mass in abdomen, either benign or cancerous

If the pain is severe or recurrent or associated with additional symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, pain during urination, trauma to abdomen then you should come to the hospital and consult a doctor immediately.

Bloating or gas accompanied with abnormal swelling, feeling of fullness or discomfort in abdomen are alarming symptoms. The abdomen feels distended and there may be perceptible swelling of abdomen. It is a very common and easily ignored symptom, but it is one of the first and the only symptom in cases of cancer ovary.

Abdominal pain and bloating – Could be Ovarian Cancer

Cancer ovary causes bloating, pelvic pain and urinary symptoms to begin with. If you have one or more of these symptoms almost everyday for 2 to 3 weeks, consult a doctor.

Ovarian cancer can also cause fatigue, back pain, pain during sex, constipation, swelling of abdomen and weight loss. Limbs and rest of the body becomes thin and wasted.

Ovarian cancer is notorious in not being apparent in early stages and causing vague symptoms which are difficult to point at towards a serious diagnosis. It becomes evident at late stages when it is difficult to treat and survival rate is comparatively poor. So if you have a family history or any other risk factor, you can go for routine check up and annual pelvic examination to screen for cancer ovary.

Ovarian cysts also cause similar symptoms, but they are fluid filled benign structures occurring throughout the child bearing age and are harmless. If such kind of cyst is very big in size or persistent or occurs in older age group needs evaluation. Any kind of bleeding or cyst in post menopausal women needs careful evaluation by a qualified specialist.

The point here is that you should not neglect any warning sign that your body gives you. Listen to your body and tune to its subtle communication which it sends to you and take a timely action. Yearly health checks provide an effective means of screening, investigating, and diagnosing problems at an early stage when lifestyle measures are effective and treatment is also more fruitful. Don’t postpone your health checks as it is your first and foremost duty to take care of your health. As the famous quote by Mahatama Gandhi says

“ It is health that is the real wealth and not the pieces of gold and silver”
