Acne or pimples affect virtually everyone at one point or the other. Some simple measures and precautions go a long way in reducing the severity as well as the sequel like scars and pigmentation that follow later. Acne is a common issue that affects numerous teenagers and a number of men and women in their prime age group. It could be due to a hormonal imbalance, dry and oily skin or due to a reaction from medicine.

Dos and Dont’s For Preventing Acne:

Proper cleansing using soap-free products – People with oily skin can use salicylic acid containing facewash. People with dry skin should use mild cleansers. Glycolic acid and lactic acid containing face washes should be sought as they help in gentle exfoliation. Excessive and too frequent washing thereby stripping the skin of its moisture is not recommended as it will lead to rebound oil secretion. Twice a day is fine. The skin should be supple for optimal results. Excessive scrubbing can irritate the skin and aggravate acne.

Use a Toner – Toner is recommended after cleansing for oily skin people to shrink the pores. Alcohol-free toner should be used in case of dry skin.

Moisturize your skin – Moisturizing after toning is important using a moisturizer that is mild and not too greasy or oil based as that block pores and attract grim.

Opt for the best diet – Diet can contribute to acne. Food rich in sugar and carbs and milk and high glycemic index diet is known to increase acne. High fiber diet like green leafy veggies, salad, nuts, fish rich in omega -3 fatty acids, seafood are helpful in acne.

Don’t touch your acne – Don’t pick or squeeze the lesions as that can cause unsightly scars.

Drink ample water – Stress from work and other factors should be addressed.

Exercise daily regularly.

Wash off your makeup before sleep – Use non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic labeled products.clean brushes regularly. Bedsheets and pillow covers should be washed weekly.

Dandruff if present should be treated.

Oil based products to be avoided – Use water-based skin care products including sunscreen. Avoid miscellaneous OTC products as they do more harm. Consult your dermatologist for proper advice.

Opt for medical care – Resistant acne and severe forms like cysts and nodules need medical intervention. Consult a doctor at the earliest. Early treatment can prevent aggravation and scarring that might be impossible to treat.

Keep a check on your medicines- Some medicines taken for other illness may aggravate acne. Check with your doctor for same.
