It is safe to use an asthma inhaler in pregnancy. In fact your doctor will recommend you to use an  inhaler to keep your asthma under control. Although most women with asthma have perfectly healthy babies. But if depends upon the severity of asthma. Uncontrolled asthma can increase the risk of:

  • Pre Eclamsia
  • Hyper tension (High Blood Pressure)
  • Premature Birth
  • IUGR (having a baby with low birth weight)

Asthma may worsen, improve or not change at all. Asthma may become same in 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy, peak at 6th month of pregnancy. The complications are due to lack of oxygen to the baby. Some women may feel the importance of asthma. This is because the pregnancy is steroid producing state and may of the medications used for asthma contain steroids.

Inhaler Safety for Pregnant Women Suffering From Asthma :

It is safe to use asthma inhaler during pregnancy because less medicines will go to your baby. Asthma inhalers contain medicine in liquid form that directly reaches the lungs. The medicines which are put inside are all different. Inhalers can contain corticosteroids also known as glucocorticosteroids which are topical. Steroids reduce the inflammation in the lungs and breathing passage and makes easier to breath. Corticosteroids asthma inhalers are used is emergency and maintenance therapy also. It has been widely studied that inhalers with steroid are considered safe. To prevent the risk of developing uncontrolled asthma they include beta-ultrastone budesonide also in the inhalers. There are two types of inhalers broadly recommended to pregnant women:

  • Bronchodilator or delivers: They also reduce inflammation without steroids. Bronchodilators are used when you are breathless, tight, chuted or wheezy. Two main drugs are salbutamol and terbutaline. Controlling asthma during pregnancy is extremely important to the wealth and well being of the fetus. Use of inhalers during pregnancy improves the pregnancy outcomes and reduces the risk of complications.
  • Long acting bronchodilator inhalers: Drugs in these inhalers work in a similar and goves relief. But work for up to 12 hrs after taking each dose. They commonly contain salmeterol. Asthma tablets are also considered safe. If you have just discovered you are pregnant, continue using asthma medications as prescribed. Contact your obstetrician for the appointment. You can contact the doctor who has prescribed the medicine, studies have confirmed that there are improved pregnancy outcomes with the use of inhaler. Asthma if left untreated can reduce the oxygenation of the blood and it can lead to the birth defects and fatality.

So the best way is to keep the asthma under control and stay healthy during pregnancy. Remember that it is important to stick to your asthma treatment. If your asthma is well controlled, there is  little or no risk of bad outcome for you or your baby.
