Jaundice is the most common of all liver disorders. It refers to the accumulation and retention of bilirubin in the skin and other tissues and it results from an obstruction in the bile duct or the loss of function of the bile-producing liver cells.

Children may also be affected by jaundice in case of severe vomiting or use of strong purgatives or in case of severe fermentation and grip by worms. In all these cases, jaundice will occur, when the pain spreads further in the stomach and bowels.

If you or your child is suffering from Jaundice, then your diet should constitute the following:

  • Low in fat
  • High in protein
  • Low  carbohydrates

Diet Recommendations for Jaundice:

Opt for Bottle Gourd (Lauki)  – Mainly the plants that belong to a cucurbitaceous family or gourd family should be taken. Bottle gourd is the vegetable which should be used in large quantity. It’s easy to digest, high in iron content, low fat and carbohydrates. Bottle gourd can be consumed in for of sides or we can prepare gruel adding rice to it.

Eat loads f Cucumbers – Cucumber is a vegetable which will help to cool the body. It can be consumed in form of juice or eaten as it is.As much as possible try to eat cooked food as the digestive power will be low during the course.

Opt for good fruits and vegetables – Fruits and vegetables which can be used for juices are lemon, grapes, pear, tomato, carrot, beet and sugarcane.

Keep a check on the chilly and oils – The diet should involve less or no salt preferably. Jaggery added to the vegetable is beneficial. The diet should not involve any form of fat eg- oil, ghee, butter etc is not advised at all. The food should be mild in spices like chilly etc. peppercorns are preferred than chillies. Drink ample amount of water.

Opt for tomatoes – Use of tomatoes is a good remedy for jaundice. Half a glass of fresh tomato juice, mixed with a pinch of salt and pepper, taken early in the morning, is effective.

Eat the right food – A mixture of almonds, dried dates and cardamom is regarded as an effective remedy for jaundice. Sugarcane juice, mixed with lime juice, can hasten recovery from jaundice.
