Women are complex. Their body undergoes numerous hormonal changes and is often riddled with health issues related to the same. The sedentary lifestyle and mental health issues can complicate situations more, making women susceptible to numerous ailments. If you are in your 30’s, it is best that you are aware about the list and end up formulating a prevention plan to ensure that you are of the risk factors. These preventive measures are a must for women who already have a family history.

Heart Disease- Yes it is a reality. Contrary to the popular belief that men are more prone for heart diseases, more women especially after the age of 50 suffer from heart diseases especially coronary heart disease. In young females there is high incidence of valvular heart disease in India as well as developing countries.  An estimated one in four women dies from some form of heart disease accounting to 27 percent of all female deaths. Adopting certain lifestyle changes like healthy diet, regular exercise, quitting smoking and alcohol can help in preventing heart disease.

Mental Health Problems- Depression and anxiety disorders are twice more common in women than in men. This is especially more around the time of childbirth and menopause as there are a lot of hormonal fluctuations during these phases.

Osteoarthritis– In women, osteoarthritis of hand and knee is twice more common as compared to men especially after fifties. Women tend to have more flexible joints and hyper mobility and the risk increases after menopause.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases– are more common and the reasons being ignorance, social issues, lack of education etc.

Stroke– Stroke or cerebral vascular accidents are especially common in elderly females because of poor control of high blood pressure and certain heart rhythm problems.

Urinary Tract Problems – These one of the commonest infections in females , the major reasons being short length of urethra and high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases.

Breast Cancer is already one of the most common cancers in females worldwide.

Thyroid Disease– Hypothyroidism is 5- 8 times more common in women as compared to men. Women undergo a lot of hormonal changes during menstruation and pregnancy so their body is very susceptible to even minor hormonal changes. Even during pregnancy and after childbirth thyroid screening is a must.

Alzheimer’s Disease– 1 out of 6 women over the age of 60 will develop Alzheimer’s, compared to 1 out of 11 men due to longer longevity of women.
