Get Tested: Medical Tests for Women in Their 40’s

You should visit your doctor from time to time. After 40 years even if you feel fine you should see your doctor for regular check-ups. This visit can help you avoid problems in the future. The purpose of these visits is to screen for medical issues and update vaccinations, so prepare your body for many more decades of life. Your doctor can help by checking you for problems. Here is a list of basic tests women should ask for. Doctor may recommend additional tests according to your personal health profile.

  • Blood Pressure: Have your blood pressure checked every three months. If your blood pressure is between 120-140 and diastolic between 80-90 then you can check more often. You can check with any pharmacy. If the top number is more than 140 and lower greater than 90 then schedule your appointment with the doctor. If you have diabetes, heart diseases, kidney problem. Then you should go to the doctor more frequent.
  • Diabetes Screening: Diabetes screening should be done every year, if you are overweight then you should be screening at a younger age and if your blood pressure is high then you are at risk for diabetes. Those who are having a family history of diabetes they are at high risk of contracting it. Many women get diabetes while pregnancy, it is dangerous for both mother and baby.
  • Lipid profile: Cholesterol is a type of fatty protein in your blood that deposits in your arteries so knowing how much cholesterol is prevented is a good predictor of your risk of heart disease. Women used to pay more attention to cholesterol level after menopause because they tend to rise.
  • Bone Density Test: Osteoporosis happens when minerals such as calcium begin to bleach from bones leading to thinning and weakening. In women it happens after menopause due to low oestrogen level. When bone density is markedly low then there are more chances of factures. It is specialised X-Ray called Dexascan (Dual energy X-ray) screen your spine, hips and wrists as you lie on the table.

  • Breast Examination: Checking your breasts for lumps, thickening, skin changes and nipple discharge. The best way to be vigilant and preventing breast cancer. Breast cancers are the most common type of cancer in women, now days in younger age also. So self examination should be done as early as 20 during shower. It should be done every month but doctors recommend checking by experts also.
  • Mammogram: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and mammography is the basic test to screen for tumours of the breast. It is specialised X-ray of the breast better than standard mammogram should be done at 35-40 years.
  • Pelvic examination and PAP smear: Cervical cancers is the second most common cause of death from cancer in women. Although many younger women are now vaccinated against the HPV strain but still who past the age need to be alert from this killer disease. So Pap smear remains preventive screening test of choice.
  • Immunizations: You should get a flu shot every year. You should have DTAp vaccine also and you should get HIV vaccines also which is given from age of 9 to 45 years. You should get vaccinated against hepatitis B also.
  • HPV Test: The HPV DNA test is used in women to detect the sexually transmitted infection that can cause cervical cancer. It is performed on the same specimen taken at the time of your PAP smear.
