Dengue is a vector born viral disease transmitted by female Aedes mosquito. This mosquito is also responsible for spreading chikungunya, yellow fever etc. As dengue is viral disease caused by 4 types of viruses, it can’t be treated by antibiotics and only supportive medical treatment is available. So the only way to protect children from dengue is to prevent mosquito bites. Till date no vaccine is available against dengue.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes most commonly feed at dusk and dawn, indoors, in shady areas or when the weather is cloudy, but they can bite and spread infection round the year and any time of day. These mosquitoes prefer to bread in areas of stagnant water such as flower vases, uncovered barrel, buckets and discarded tires, water coolers, damp walls and ceilings etc.
So the best way to prevent mosquito bite is to clear water from these breading areas and stop their growth.
Children should wear long sleeves trouser and shirts when outdoors during day and evening. They can use mosquito repellent cream also to avoid biting.
Use mosquito net over the beds and can usepermethrin treated nets.
Insect repellent contains DEET can be used to avoid breeding of mosquitoes in indoor areas.
