Family planning services help people to decide when, how many, at what interval and whether to have children at all. It is very important as it is apparent from the name itself ‘well-planned family’ so that the couple has the freedom to choose the number of children and in the process choose health and happiness for the household. Family planning is an important component that benefits the health of the mother making her healthy and happy.

Unplanned pregnancies pose a burden on health and finances of the family, social structure of the country and environment as a whole. The importance to different people involved is as follows-

Benefits of Family Planning for the Mother-

  • Improved health
  • Attention to family
  • More time
  • Career growth
  • Freedom

Benefits of Family Planning to the Children-

  • More health
  • Happiness
  • More opportunities
  • Get more security, love, and care

Benefits of Family Planning for the Father-

  • Less financial burden
  • Less responsibility
  • Family resources are preserved

Ways to prevent pregnancy and opt for family planning :

  • Barriers- Male and female condoms, diaphragm, cervical cap, contraceptive sponges, and spermicides. They protect from sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.
  • Hormonal methods– Regulate or stop ovulation to prevent pregnancy. They also thicken cervical mucus. Used in form of pills, injections, skin patches, vaginal rings, intrauterine devices, implantable rods etc. They regularise cycles, reduce blood loss, reduce dysmenorrhea and benefit in many diseases like PCOD, endometriosis etc.
  • Intrauterine devices- Small T shaped devices inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
  • Permanent methods– Surgical methods done for long-term contraception when the family is complete and no more children are needed. Surgical blockage of tubes is done and this is not reversible. Gives benefit to high-risk women who don’t want a pregnancy.

Millions of women want to avoid pregnancy but are not able to do so because they don’t have access to modern contraceptive methods. There are still unsafe abortions happening because of unwanted pregnancies. Many deaths of mothers and children occur due to complications of pregnancy. So by using family planning these things are reduced and road to good health is created with more chances of development.
