Medical tests for women are important as they highlight the early diagnosis of an illness. All men and women are vulnerable to certain diseases with age but women need some additional screening in various stages of life. It is essential that the women opt for some tests to detect any abnormality in their body early. This is essential for early detection and timely treatment.

  • Screening For Cervical Cancer: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among the females in our country. All females should get their pap smear test done regularly after the age of 30. (It is recommended at an earlier age in girls with risk factors). More specialized tests like HPVDNA are now advised for cervical cancer screening.
  • Screening For Breast Cancer: Breast cancer is the common cancer in urban female population. All females with no risk factors should get a medical examination every year between the age of 25-40 years. Mammography every one or two years is recommended after 40 years of age. The frequency of mammography screening decreases after 60 years.
  • Osteoporosis Screening:Ssignificant reduction in bone density affects females with advancing age. Bones become weaker and are more prone to fracture after minor injuries. Bone density analysis is recommended in all women.

  • Vitamin D: Due to lack of sun exposure females in cities have low vitamin D levels. Lack of vitamin D had various symptoms, but a simple test can detect the problem. Thereafter treatment is also easy.
  • Pelvic Ultrasound: All females after the age of 40 years till they attain menopause are advised to get a pelvic ultrasound. It helps in diagnosis of various problems females face during the pre menopausal phase. Pelvic ultrasounds are recommended for females with certain conditions like fibroid uterus even after menopause.
  • Lipid Profile: This screening is important in diagnosing the risk of heart disease. Lipid profile is done annually for all females after the age of 45-50 years.

Other tests recommended at regular intervals are :

  • Thyroid profile
  • Blood sugar
  • Complete blood count
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Electrocardiography

Today we are facing lethal illnesses due to our lifestyle. Most of the diseases are silent, not showing any early symptoms. Hence regular screening is the only way of detection.
