Undergoing medical tests on an annual basis is a very good and easy way to prevent a number of diseases and detect ailment at the right time, facilitating timely medical interventions. Entering the 50’s means the menopause for most women, and it is one of life’s milestones where it is worth taking stock of your health. Don’t let any illness rob you of your health. When you go for your annual physical, make sure your doctor performs or recommends these simple tests that may save your health.

Test Recommended for Fit 50’s – Women:

Few of the tests that can be conducted in your 50s are as follows:

Checking Your Weight Regularly: At 50 and above most people start gaining weight and being overweight puts you at a greater risk for developing various diseases. So eat healthy and be fit!

Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly: It is a silent killer that can affect your heart, brain, eyes, kidneys and keeping it under check will prevent many life threatening diseases. Don’t let hypertension sneak up on you. Get your blood pressure check up done regularly. It is simple, quick, and painless.

-Thyroid Hormone Test: Your thyroid gland in your neck is the body’s powerhouse, producing hormones needed for metabolism. Ageing and disease, such as an overactive immune system can cause the thyroid gland to produce too much or too little of its hormones. Consult your doctor if you have unexplained symptoms, so that a blood test can be recommended to check your thyroid.

-Blood Test Yearly: Blood sugar and cholesterol are killers. Controlling your cholesterol may add years to your life. Untreated diabetes can destroy your health, causing heart disease, kidney failure, and blindness. So, keep them under check.

-Eye Check Ups: For early detection of age related cataract and glaucoma- major cause of blindness in old age. Vision robbing diseases become more common as you age. Be sure to get your eyes examined regularly, every one to two years, or more frequently if advised to do so.

-Screening for Colonic Cancer by Colonoscopy: Inspecting the inside of rectum and large intestine for pre cancerous polyps to prevent colon cancer. Just make sure you get it done if you have any symptoms suggestive of bowel disease. Bowel disease symptoms include any change in your normal bowel habit such as prolonged constipation, a more frequent or urgent need to go to the toilet, passing blood or mucus, or pain on opening your bowels.

-Additional Test for Women: PAP Smear is a must do test for women. A mild discomfort pays big dividends in helping to protect you from cervical cancer. Mammography– At this age you are entitled a mammogram every three years. Early detection of breast cancer can save your breast and your life. Examine your skin for any new moles or increasing size of old moles to prevent skin cancer. Remember self check and assessment of your health is a must. Beware of your body and don’t ignore any signs and symptoms.
