First few weeks with the baby at home are crazy and the most memorable time of your life. Till now life was rotating all around you and your needs but from now on baby’s needs are a priority and it needs round the clock attention and care. It is extremely important that you as a father stand up to the task and start supporting your wife the new mother. Given below are few aspects that need to be implemented:

Tips For New Fathers:

  • Take time off – Take at least 10-15 days leave from work to settle things at home and help your wife in getting acquainted to a totally new life. It will be one of the best experiences of your life. Make your family a priority.
  • Learn to change diaper– This is a major area which you need to sharpen your skills in. Start learning in the hospital itself. It is a bonding time with your baby.
  • Limit visitors- For a few weeks you both are so exhausted and overwhelmed that handling guests is very difficult. Also if anyone comes, they should follow rules for the baby like sanitising their hands before handling the baby.
  • Help with household chores– This will be a great help for your wife and caring for the baby will become easier. Moreover it is not only her duty to do the chores, it is responsibility of both partners.
  • Take the baby for walks– All throughout the day it is very stressful to stay at home. So you can take walks as a family for relaxation.
  • Massage the baby– It creates bonding with the baby and helps it fall asleep. You will also be awed to see and touch the little creature.
  • Soothe the baby at night– If the baby is crying at night, don’t just keep lying down. Help her soothe.
  • Play with the baby – Your baby will look forward to this quality time with dad in future.
  • Me time– Take some time alone also. Help your wife also take some me time as you both will get overwhelmed if always with the baby.
  • Do not pile up too many things in a day – It is now not possible with the baby around.
  • Write up- Maintain a diary to pen down your feelings and emotions which will be unique for this time only and will never come back.
  • Pay attention to your wife– Give her attention, compliments, gifts and tell her that you love her because she is the one who has endured the pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, night time baby care and is more insecure and hassled than you are. Be patient, supportive and communicative with your partner.
  • Don’t panic – Every cough, fever, loose stool or any other medical issue of the baby can give you shudders but believe in your parenting skills and baby’s strength. You both are much stronger than you think and don’t panic on each activity of your little one.
  • Talk to other new parents
  • Take help
  • Take care of yourself first as you need to be happy and healthy to keep the family in good health
  • Accept second hand baby things from friends and family as it will ease your pocket and be environment friendly as well.

Having a baby is no rocket science but caring correctly and bringing up worthy individuals is definitely the responsibility of both parents. The more energy you put in, the better results you will get. So fathers are also the primary parent and not the optional ones as many of you think. So go ahead and embrace fatherhood completely and the results will be very sweet in form of your baby’s smiles, kisses and the unconditional love.
