Polycystic ovarian disorder is the most common form of ovarian cysts. Cysts are small sacs filled with fluids and incase of PCOD, a women has presence of multiple cysts in her ovaries. It is a condition, which is caused due to imbalance in the female sexual hormones. Polycystic ovaries are benign cysts and generally cause problems with menstrual cycle, fertility, cardiac function, and hirsutism.


Risks: Besides cystic ovaries, women diagnosed with PCOD also face other health problems such as pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and endometrial cancer. Women with PCOS may also encounter high levels of androgens (male hormone) and weight gain or obesity.

Symptoms: Symptoms begin to show after a menstruation starts. Due to decrease in female sex hormones and high levels of male hormones, this condition may cause women to develop certain male characteristics, such as, excess hair on the face, chest, stomach, thumbs, or toes; decreased breast size; deeper voice and thin hair. While other common symptoms are:

  • Irregular periods
  • Sudden unexplained Weight gain
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Acne
  • Mood swings
  • Infertility
  • Pelvic pain

Treatment: An early diagnosis and treatment, lowers the risk of developing complications. Medications can reduce certain symptoms and help to have regular menstrual cycles. Doctors prescribe birth control pills to stop ovulation, androgen reducing pills to balance the male hormones and metformin to control diabetes caused due to PCOS. Fertility medicines are prescribed if one is having trouble getting pregnant but, to prevent long-term health problems it is important to practice the following things:

  • Regular exercise,
  • Eat healthy foods. Includes lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, and whole grains in your diet.
  • Avoid foods that are high in saturated fat, such as meats, cheeses, and fried foods.
  • Have control on your weight. Losing weight helps in PCOS, as it gets your hormones in balance and regulates your menstrual cycle.
  • Quit smoking.
