Post natal massage is a full body massage therapy given to mother’s every day up to 40 days after the birth of a baby by trained therapists. It is an effective and holistic approach to become relaxed and reduce the stress of child birth. It also has other benefits like pain relief, reduced swelling, better sleep, improved lactation, etc.

Benefits of Massage Therapy:

  • It should be noted that when the muscles are relaxed, circulation improves and stress hormones are reduced. Anxiety and depression also respond well to therapy. It is all about getting some “me time” away from the chaos of having a newborn at home.
  • Emotional support and pampering also take care of many things. Chronic pain, numbness, and tingling that develop are taken care of.
  • Stress hormone cortisol is reduced during the massage. Aromatic essential oils bring a balance of mood and hormones.
  • Massage increases blood and lymph circulation to facilitate elimination of excess fluids and hence swelling in body is reduced.
  • Having said all this, it is seen that after Caesarean section, many women are a little wary of getting a massage. But you can safely take massage after your stitches are out and wound has healed after about 1 week to 10 days after consulting your doctor. But the masseuse should not massage your abdomen or the scar area. Lower back should also be massaged with caution as it may hurt in the face down position on pressure. Back can be massaged sitting upright or with low pressure.

There are a few situations though when you should avoid getting a massage done i.e.

  • If any skin problems like rash, blister, skin infection, eczema etc
  • Medical complications
  • Hernia
  • In case of high BP also massage should be done with caution and gently

So to conclude, massage is a very effective way to relax the new mother physically, emotionally and mentally and also to give her the much-needed break from her new responsibilities which she finds a little overwhelming in the beginning. But you should get it done from a trained person who is well aware of the minute details and you get maximum benefit for your time and effort.
