The new mother has to adjust to so many physical & emotional changes in a short span. Besides there are so many social & cultural beliefs have to be taken care of. The preparation for the same should be discussed in pregnancy to help the New Mother enjoy her motherhood.

She has to look after herself, her new baby, learn breast feeding besides learning to filter the contradictory opinions. What to eat, how to breast feed advice is given by doctors – nurses , family members , visitors , well-wishers & many a times Dr Google. She doesn’t know whom to follow.

The recovery of the birth canal in case of vaginal delivery & the surgical scar in case of Caesarian is a painful process. Besides all joints, nerves & muscles are undergoing changes. Breast feeding to become painless & effortless takes a week -10 days. She loses the freedom to eat and sleep when she wants because of her newborn child.

Because of so many myths people around her don’t allow her to eat & drink what she wants. Many a times people have unscientific advice regarding not watching television , brushing teeth & listening to music etc also.

All these factors push so many young mothers into stress and sometimes even post-partum depression.

Motherhood is an instinct which gives enormous strength. Use your judgement & strength to find a balance between social & medical advice.

Some tips to follow

  • Don’t exhaust yourself with breast feeding – take support from your health care provider.
  • Eat a diet with plenty of fluids, proteins, fibres & essential fats.
  • Eat what you & your child digest and your doctor permits in special medical problems.
  • Enjoy the wisdom & pampering of your mother & mother in law without interfering with medical advice.
  • Light yoga, ambulation (walking around), breathing exercises, leg exercises are permitted & desirable.
  • Avoid sudden jerky movements, cough & constipation.
  • Eat healthy, stay happy, catch up with sleep whenever the child permits, take your supplements to enjoy motherhood.
