Hair loss can be very depressing  during menopause, as a woman’s hair is associated with her femininity, sexuality and individual sense of style. The emotional and psychological effects of hair loss are can be poor self-esteem, social anxiety and even lower job performance.

During menopause, there is a decrease in level of female hormones oestrogen and progesterone and a relative increase in the male hormone, testosterone, which in turn affects the hair growth. The hair start getting thinner and weaker beginning from the crown of head. Testosterone also shrinks hair follicles, causing hair loss on the head but a greater hair growth  on the face.

Other causes of hair loss may be due to iron deficiency, thyroid disorders, sudden scalp infections, prolonged stress and vitamin B12 /D deficiency.When it comes to hair loss, missing the early signs is the commonest mistake many women make. As much as 50 percent loss can occur before it’s noticeable to the human eye in the form of your ponytail becoming lighter or your hair parting becoming more visible.

Many a times some simple changes in lifestyle can reap huge benefits in fighting hair loss and improving overall health.

  • Eat a balanced diet – A balanced, low fat diet with plenty of water for hydration improves hair health.
  • Go for green tea – Drinking green tea, getting enough vitamin B6,weight loss and using hyaluronic acid shampoo also help in hair loss prevention.
  • Opt for an exercise routine – Exercise and use of relaxation techniques like meditation and deep breathing exercises help to reduce stress. They also prevent some of the other symptoms of menopause, including mood swings, weight gain, and insomnia. All of these factors are important for maintaining hormonal balance, which promotes healthy hair growth.
  • Check your alcohol and caffeine intake – Reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption and having adequate sleep also help in hair growth.
  • Check your medicine intake – Consult your doctor if you are having significant sudden hair loss. Estrogen therapy or minoxidil can be given but the side effects have to be discussed with your doctor beforehand.
  • You can opt for cosmetic treatments – A hair transplant, scalp lifts, or laser therapyare other costly, but effective, method for treating extensive hair loss.
