It is the second most common major surgical procedure performed each year on women. It means the removal of uterus either laparoscopically, abdominally or vaginally. A hysterectomy is a surgery to remove a woman’s uterus (also known as the womb). The uterus is where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant. During the surgery the whole uterus is usually removed. Your doctor may also remove your fallopian tubes and ovaries. This is a major surgery for a woman and also plays a major role on the psych of a woman.
Primary Reasons or Indications are:
The following are some reasons due to which a woman might be recommended hysterectomy:
Fibroids – they can be defined as the non cancerous growths in the uterus.
Unexplained uterine bleeding – this could be caused due to cysts, polyps or fibroids. It could also be hormone induced.
Uterine prolapsed – in this the muscles that are supporting the uterus become weak and it can sag or slip from its normal position into the vagina causing pain and a number of complications.
Chronic pelvic pain – it can be a symptom or a complication of a disease.
Endometriosis – this is a painful disorder in which the lining that is usually inside the uterus starts to grow outside. It involves the ovaries, uterus and the tissue lining.
Cancers of uterus account for only 10%of hysterectomies performed.
Quality of Life:
Hysterectomy causes short term morbidity but appears to increase average life expectancy in perimenopausal women and is cost saving as medical remedies are most often unsuccessful.
Hysterectomy doesn’t affect the Sex Life:
Hysterectomy dose not ruin the sex life. Orgasms will be the same. Lubrication will be the same. Your libido will not change but, be aware that these things do change as you age. Hysterectomy is 5 inches away from any nerves of orgasm and will not ruin any sexual function.
In fact, many women have stronger orgasms and fewer women are sexually inactive after hysterectomy. Hysterectomy will not result in aging faster, neither will removal of ovaries.
Research tells us that women gain weight as they age if they don’t exercise and modify their eating habits. So, if you are going to be one of those women who eat more than you need and exercise less than you should, you will definitely gain weight irrespective of whether you have a hysterectomy or not.
In short, hysterectomy will not harm the sense of womanhood or femininity because womanhood is in the brain, soul and heart of every woman and is not restricted to the genitals. No surgery can alter that and the sexual partner cannot specifically tell that you have had a hysterectomy, unless you choose to tell.
