What is Menopause Syndrome?

Menopause is defined as the absence of menstrual periods for 12 months. It is also defined as the phase in which the female hormone production is ceasing. The hormones that regulate the breasts, body shape, hair, menstrual cycles, and pregnancy are all under a change.

Most women reach menopause between the age of 45 & 55 but it may occur as early as the 30s or 40s or may not occur until 60s. Menopause is the process through which a woman ceases to be fertile or menstrual. It is a normal part of life and is not considered a disease or a condition.

Signs & Symptoms associated with Menopause:

  • Irregular Periods: Changes in menstrual periods is the first symptoms of menopause which is noticed. Some will have frequent menstruation others will menstruate every 2-3 months.
  • Lower Fertility: Perimenopause can be defined as the stage 3-5 years ago. During this period the estrogen levels drop remarkably. This reduces the chances of becoming pregnant.
  • Vaginal Dryness: Dryness, itching, and discomfort of the vagina occurs during perimenopause
  • Osteoporosis: A woman may lose bone density rapidly during the first few years after menopause. Low bone leads to higher risk of osteoporosis. This is due to thinning of tissue and decreases lubrication.
  • Hot Flushed: This is the sudden sensation of heat in the upper body. The skin may become red and patch.
  • Urinary Problems: Women tend to be more susceptible to urinary tract infection that is cystitis. They need to go to the toilet more often.
  • Emotional Changes: Women can experience depression and feel low during menopause. Women may also experience low libido due to these changes.
  • Disturbed Sleep: Can be caused due to night sweats, insomnia or anxiety.
  • Other Effects: Deposition of fat in the abdomen. Overweight and obesity. Hair loss and thinning of hairs. Breast shrinking. Symptoms tapes off own a period of 2 to 5 years. Vaginal dryness and itching can become chronic and worse without treatment.

Menopause can lead to the development of complications like cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, urinary incontinence and breast cancer.
