Dental hygiene refers to the practice of keeping the teeth healthy in order to save them from various dental problems. Dental hygiene is an essential part of oral hygiene because without the first the latter cannot be achieved. Proper cleaning of teeth and avoiding practices that may endanger their well-being is what ensures dental hygiene.

Why is it required?

Dental hygiene is important because it helps prevent:

Gingivitis, Bad breath, Dental cavities, Periodontal diseases , Mouth ulcers, Plaque

How can it be achieved?

Dental hygiene can be achieved through the following practices:

Teeth must be brushed twice daily., A good quality soft-bristled brush must be brought in use while brushing along with a fluoride rich toothpaste., Brushing must not be brisk or hasty, and the complete mouth that is the inside and the outside of the chewing surfaces must be properly cleaned., The brush must be cleaned well and stored in a clean place. It must also be changed once in every three months., Flossing is also significant in tooth cleaning and must be practiced at least once per day. The floss used must be more than ten inches long and must be used by curving around each tooth and not in just up down motion., Professional cleaning of teeth can be considered at least twice per year, which includes tooth polishing, tooth scaling, and debridement in case of tartar accumulation., Proper treatment for plaque removal must be undertaken in time to prevent issues like gingivitis and receding gum., Food rich in Vitamins B and C add to the health of the gums and fluoride rich water prevents tooth cavity, hence they must be consumed. Sugar and carbohydrates damage the teeth and therefore their consumption must be limited., Late night eating habits must also be shunned.

Dental implant is an artificial tooth root that provides a strong foundation for the permanent or the removable replacement teeth. Dental implants may be required for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to disease, injury, or any other reason.

A dental implant is placed into the jaw to hold the replacement tooth or bridge. The tooth root implant, made of titanium, is placed into the bone socket of the lost tooth. With time as the jawbone heals, it grows around the implant, anchoring it securely in the jaw. The time taken for the healing process can be from six to 12 weeks.

Dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone in the gums. Once the implants are put in place, replacement teeth can be mounted onto them. Dental implant surgery is performed under local anesthesia, and so, no pain should be felt during the procedure.

Who can get a Dental Implant done?

A suitable candidate for a dental implant is one who is in good general and oral health. The person should have healthy gums that are free from periodontal disease and adequate bone to hold the implant. They also must ensure good oral hygiene and go for regular dental checkups.

What are the advantages of getting a Dental Implant?

Better appearance, Improved speech, Improved comfort, Easier eating, Improved oral health

How to care for Dental Implants?

Dental implants need to be cared for like one would for real teeth. They need routine care like brushing, flossing, rinsing with mouthwash, and regular dental check-ups.

The procedure undertaken to remove the infection or decaying of tooth and to protect teeth from further infections is described as root canal procedure. This procedure involves the removal of the pulp in a tooth which includes nerves and blood vessels followed by the cleaning, filling up and sealing of the hollow space.

Why go for it?

A cavity or a crack in the tooth forms the passage for the bacteria to infiltrate the pulp. The bacteria can cause an infection of the pulp which can lead to the following:

Abscessed tooth, Loss of bone around the tip of the root, Swelling that has the possibilities of spreading out to the face and neck, Death of the pulp, Loss of tooth, A check up for root canal procedure can also be considered when –

, Gums become tender or swollen, Prolonged sensitivity, Severe tooth ache, Discoloration of the tooth

Procedure –

A root canal procedure is performed by an endodontist. The procedure may include the injection of anesthesia to numb the area, followed by drilling a small hole into the tooth to clear the debris and the infected tissues. The leftover debris is flushed away using sodium hypochlorite. After this both the root canal and the chamber are filled up with a sealing material which is mostly gutta percha. After the final sealing of the exterior hole is done, a crown may be added to better protect the tooth.

Risks –

Though a root canal treatment is mostly successful, there may be chances of the occurrence of the following complications:

Staining or discoloration resulting from root canal materials or left out debris, Undetected crack, Escaping of the solution into the periapical space leading to edema, hematoma and so on

There are a number of aspects that are important to ensure that your child has excellent dental hygiene. Some important recommendations are – Regular tooth brushing at least twice a day, rinsing after every meal, regular dental checkups and getting preventive dental treatments like fluoride APF gel application and Pit and Fissure sealants. It is important that the points are followed to ensure healthy teeth. Try and incorporate these practices in your everyday life.

Either your child is having a deep cavity that is infected and needs appropriate treatment or your child must be in the teething period and probably getting a new tooth in the mouth. It is important that you ask your child to show you his/her teeth. It is important that you consult a dental specialist as soon as possible to ensure that the situation does not complicate. During the consultation do ask the doctor the diet recommendations and restrictions along with steps for dental hygiene.

In case your child knocks out a permanent tooth then the first thing is to immediately get your child to the nearest dentist along with the tooth. Just gently wash the tooth for 10 seconds with cold water and get it either soaked in milk or just ask your child to hold it in his/her mouth if your child is that big enough. Do not soak it in water or do not wash it vigorously with water. In case you are able to get your child and his/her tooth to the dentist in the first 1 hour of teeth falling, then the dentist will be able to save his/her tooth after some treatment and put it back in the mouth.

Fluoridated toothpastes that are made for babies are advised, as fluoride toothpastes helps to prevent tooth decay. A pea size paste should be dispensed on the brush so that even if the child swallows the paste it’s not in excess and is gentle on the stomach. Consult a child dentist and get trained on how to handle children while brushing their teeth. The amount of pressure that is required and how to ensure that the child spits out the paste.

Yes, thumb sucking and use of a pacifier is harmful. Its continuous use exerts pressure on the front upper and lower teeth along with the bone which is soft during the growing stage. This causes deformity of teeth and bones. Do not promote the use of a thumb or a pacifier. Try and discourage the use. If your child is teething, opt for a cold tether. If the habit persists consult a pediatrician or a psychologist.

Children should brush at least twice a day – once post dinner before sleeping and then post breakfast in the morning so that the child’s teeth are safe during the day. It is the duty of the parent to ensure that the habit is a part of the child’s daily routine. It is essential that a child understands the importance of prevention.

Baby bottle mouth or Nursing bottle caries as also called is a kind of cavity that starts from the gums and extends to the entire tooth surface circumferentially. It’s the only kind of cavity that spreads to adjacent teeth, thereby giving it a look of black broken teeth especially among the front teeth. It happens due to intake of milk with or without sugar, juices, rice, sweet chocolates, chips etc. This doesn’t mean that the child is prohibited from the intake of such products but one should try giving them in the first half of the day and it’s the parent’s duty to ensure that they clean their children’s teeth with wet cotton or a cloth post the child has eaten. There are few dental fluoridated creams that help to re-calcify the teeth. If parents get their children for regular dental checkups then this can be avoided. The first stage of detection is white discoloration of teeth.

You can give the child a Cold Tether to bite. This helps the inflamed gums. You can also apply an anesthetic ointment incase of severe pain and irritation. This should be followed by gentle massage on the gums. It is important that you consult a doctor about the ointment. Ask your dental specialist about the pressure allowed for the massage and how to maintain the sterility of the cold tether. It is a tough time for your child and it is important to maintain patience during the same. A cranky child can test your nerves, but remain calm and remember that it is just a passing phase.

Children start teething at the age of 6months. Usually at first the bottom front milk teeth erupt followed by the others. In some cases one may find neonatal teeth i.e. the baby is born with conical shape teeth. There is nothing to worry in that case as the same fall on their own and are replaced by milk teeth. The milk teeth come at the same time as other children- at the age of 6 months. One should be aware of the do’s and don’ts that are associated with teething- dental hygiene, diet restrictions & recommendations are necessary.

You child should see a dentist at the age of 6 months to 1 year. When the first milk tooth erupts in the mouth the child should see a dentist. This is an important phase as the doctor suggests on the measures that are to be taken during teething. Also some precautionary points are to be explained as children tend to become cranky during the teething time. It is necessary to ask about oral hygiene, type of tooth paste and dietary restrictions.
