DENTAL HYGIENE

Dental hygiene refers to the practice of keeping the teeth healthy in order to save them from various dental problems. Dental hygiene is an essential part of oral hygiene because without the first the latter cannot be achieved. Proper cleaning of teeth and avoiding practices that may endanger their well-being is what ensures dental hygiene.

Why is it required?

Dental hygiene is important because it helps prevent:

Gingivitis, Bad breath, Dental cavities, Periodontal diseases , Mouth ulcers, Plaque

How can it be achieved?

Dental hygiene can be achieved through the following practices:

Teeth must be brushed twice daily., A good quality soft-bristled brush must be brought in use while brushing along with a fluoride rich toothpaste., Brushing must not be brisk or hasty, and the complete mouth that is the inside and the outside of the chewing surfaces must be properly cleaned., The brush must be cleaned well and stored in a clean place. It must also be changed once in every three months., Flossing is also significant in tooth cleaning and must be practiced at least once per day. The floss used must be more than ten inches long and must be used by curving around each tooth and not in just up down motion., Professional cleaning of teeth can be considered at least twice per year, which includes tooth polishing, tooth scaling, and debridement in case of tartar accumulation., Proper treatment for plaque removal must be undertaken in time to prevent issues like gingivitis and receding gum., Food rich in Vitamins B and C add to the health of the gums and fluoride rich water prevents tooth cavity, hence they must be consumed. Sugar and carbohydrates damage the teeth and therefore their consumption must be limited., Late night eating habits must also be shunned.

DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implant is an artificial tooth root that provides a strong foundation for the permanent or the removable replacement teeth. Dental implants may be required for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to disease, injury, or any other reason.

A dental implant is placed into the jaw to hold the replacement tooth or bridge. The tooth root implant, made of titanium, is placed into the bone socket of the lost tooth. With time as the jawbone heals, it grows around the implant, anchoring it securely in the jaw. The time taken for the healing process can be from six to 12 weeks.

Dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone in the gums. Once the implants are put in place, replacement teeth can be mounted onto them. Dental implant surgery is performed under local anesthesia, and so, no pain should be felt during the procedure.

Who can get a Dental Implant done?

A suitable candidate for a dental implant is one who is in good general and oral health. The person should have healthy gums that are free from periodontal disease and adequate bone to hold the implant. They also must ensure good oral hygiene and go for regular dental checkups.

What are the advantages of getting a Dental Implant?

Better appearance, Improved speech, Improved comfort, Easier eating, Improved oral health

How to care for Dental Implants?

Dental implants need to be cared for like one would for real teeth. They need routine care like brushing, flossing, rinsing with mouthwash, and regular dental check-ups.

ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE

The procedure undertaken to remove the infection or decaying of tooth and to protect teeth from further infections is described as root canal procedure. This procedure involves the removal of the pulp in a tooth which includes nerves and blood vessels followed by the cleaning, filling up and sealing of the hollow space.

Why go for it?

A cavity or a crack in the tooth forms the passage for the bacteria to infiltrate the pulp. The bacteria can cause an infection of the pulp which can lead to the following:

Abscessed tooth, Loss of bone around the tip of the root, Swelling that has the possibilities of spreading out to the face and neck, Death of the pulp, Loss of tooth, A check up for root canal procedure can also be considered when –

Gums become tender or swollen, Prolonged sensitivity, Severe tooth ache, Discoloration of the tooth

Procedure –

A root canal procedure is performed by an endodontist. The procedure may include the injection of anesthesia to numb the area, followed by drilling a small hole into the tooth to clear the debris and the infected tissues. The leftover debris is flushed away using sodium hypochlorite. After this both the root canal and the chamber are filled up with a sealing material which is mostly gutta percha. After the final sealing of the exterior hole is done, a crown may be added to better protect the tooth.

Risks –

Though a root canal treatment is mostly successful, there may be chances of the occurrence of the following complications:

Staining or discoloration resulting from root canal materials or left out debris, Undetected crack, Escaping of the solution into the periapical space leading to edema, hematoma and so on
