Zumba is a good cardio workout and also provides wholesome exercise for the entire body
A large number of people – men, women and children – today joined a fitness-cum-fun session of ‘Mass Zumba’ at Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula, organized with an aim to encourage people to adopt regular physical exercise in their day to day lives as a means of preventing a multitude of lifestyle disorders.
Zumba is fitness dance exercise routine that is gaining huge popularity across the world as an effective means to exercise, lose weight, and stay fit and active.
The session was organized at the Hospital premises where around 250 people participated in the one of its kind mass activity that was a combination of exercise and fun.
With physical inactivity turning out to be a major bane of our times, doctors and health experts say it is essential to encourage people to exercise every day. The Hospital’s initiative was aimed at introducing people to a new form of exercising mechanism which is more entertaining and engaging.
“It takes motivation to exercise daily and stay physically fit. We often see people taking gym membership and then after a few days of exercising, losing both motivation and interest. The motive of organizing this session is to encourage people about the fitness regimes that people can practice in their day to day lives. Zumba is dance cum fitness routine which is highly engaging as well as entertaining. It can be adopted in your day to day life without the need for joining a gym or going outdoors. Even better is the fact that an entire family can join together in the activity. Activities performed in groups have better impact and are easier to follow daily,” says Dr. Rishi Mangat, Unit Head, Paras Bliss Hospital, Panckula.
Aside from its benefits for heart health, Zumba provides a workout for the whole body. From head and shoulder rolls that loosen up the neck and warm up the upper body, to footwork that strengthens and stretches calves and ankles, this fitness method touches on nearly every muscle and joint. Apart from being a good cardio workout, it is therefore also helpful in maintaining flexibility of the body and keeping the joints healthy.
According to the World Health Organization, insufficient physical activity is 1 of the 10 leading risk factors for death worldwide. It is today a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes. With mechanization of all our daily jobs including household chores, our levels of physical activity have dramatically reduced, causing an epidemic like rise in lifestyle diseases.
Physical activity has significant health benefits and contributes to prevent NCDs. However, more than 80% of the world’s adolescent population is insufficiently physically active.
