17 lakh Biharis are suffering from Hepatitis, reveal recent studies

Recent studies reveal that 4 crore Indians are affected by Hepatitis B and 17 lakh Biharis are victims of Hepatitis C. Also Hepatitis B virus is considered more contagious than the HIV virus. During one such free health checkup camp organised on 26th July to mark the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, hundreds of Mithila residents participated and also availed a free FibroScan check provided by the hospital. The patients also got Hepatitis B vaccination during the camp.

Paras Global Hospital’s Gastro specialist Dr. Sharad Kumar Jha, who is also a popular name in Darbhanga, said, “Hepatitis B virus is more contagious than HIV. Around 17 lakh Biharis and 4 crore Indians are affected by Hepatitis B. We need to take stringent steps towards controlling the rise in hepatitis.” He also highlighted the various types of hepatitis, including Hepatitis A, B, C, E, out of which Hepatitis B and C are the most dangerous. A few common symptoms of hepatitis include jaundice, l of appetite, body ache, joint pain, among others.

Apart from it, there are various reasons due to which the hepatitis virus spreads:

  • Blood transfusion, Unsafe sex, Using and reusing medical injections, razors. etc.
  • Hepatitis affected mother passing it on to the child

During the last stage of hepatitis, a patient is likely to have liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. In case a person has liver cancer, the only way to save his life is through a liver transplant.

Hepatitis A and E can easily be controlled in Bihar by keeping water sources clean and by consuming clean drinking water. Hence, it is important for people to realize the need to drink safe water at all times.
