57 yrs old Iraqi patient, Mahmood Afat ABD Alrahman, was successfully treated for cardiac blockages through a highly complex operation, Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) and Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery. The surgery was carried out by a renowned cardiac surgeon – Dr. Mahesh Wadhwani, Chief of Cardiac Surgery & HOD, Department of Paediatric and Adult Cardiac Surgery at Paras Hospitals Gurugram, credited to be part of more than 6000 major heart surgeries over the last 11 years.
Mahmood Alrahman, a teacher by occupation was complaining of breathlessness and fatigue for the last 3 months. He shares, “I would feel breathless and tired on little exertion also. I could not walk properly or do any physical activity. Climbing a flight of stairs was out of the question. Sighting my health issues, I decided to consult a doctor who through normal tests diagnosed that I have an issue in my heart and may need surgery. He also recommended that I go to India for the specialized heart treatment. On searching the internet and through recommendations, we were told about Dr. Wadhwani at Paras Hospitals, Gurugram.”
Mahmood Alrahman was made to go through few tests and invasive procedures such as angiography. The tests revealed single-vessel heart disease and LV Dysfunction. The reason for the breathless was the blockages both, in his heart arteries and his main Aortic Valve. He was recommended a dual surgery – replacement of the aortic valve and a bypass surgery to ensure that his heart pumps the blood efficiently. Despite going through such a complex heart surgery Mr. Mahmood Alrahm was discharged from the hospital in just 5 days post surgery, which by itself is a testimony to the excellence adhered through each step in his management.
According to Dr. Mahesh Wadhwani, Chief of Cardiac Surgery & HOD, Department of Paediatric and Adult Cardiac Surgery, Paras Hospitals Gurugram, “We decided to replace the value of the patient with the world’s leading tissue valve. This kind of an implant is intended for use in patients whose aortic valvular disease is sufficiently advanced to warrant replacement of their natural valve with a prosthetic one..”
He adds, “Also to ensure that the coronary artery disease also was tackled simultaneously, we did bypass grafting for the same. During CABG, a healthy vein from the body is grafted, to the blocked coronary artery. This creates a new path for oxygen-rich blood to flow to the heart muscle. Surgeons can bypass multiple coronary arteries during one surgery.”
The best aspect of this operation was the exceptional surgical skill and rehabilitation expertise that helped the patient get a release from the hospital after just 5 days post-surgery. Mahmood Alrahman shares, “Dr. Mahesh Wadhwani has given me a new life. Through the latest technology and surgical expertise, he has given me the best care. Paras Hospitals, Gurugram is one of the best hospitals for cardiac surgery for international patients. I sincerely wish that the hospital and Dr. Wadhwani continue the positive work and help as many patients as possible.”
