“They say on earth you do have angels. For my family and me, it is Dr. Mehta, who ensured our son’s health and well being. May Allah bless him!” shares Abdul Saeed, father of 3 yr. old Mohammad Quisky Saeed, successfully treated for Brain Tumor at Paras Gurgaon.
According to Abdul Saeed, a car garage owner in Iraq, his son could not play, walk or climb stairs. He used to feel sleepy all the time and had an imbalanced gait. Mohammad used to only ask for food. The numerous episodes of seizures, abnormal hand and leg movements along with the rolling eyes, scared them. They started to consult numerous specialists in Iraq to ensure a normal life for their son. His symptoms had started when he turned one and had been persistent for the last 2 years.
Doctors prescribed him numerous medications and vitamins. He was given special supplements but nothing made him capable of walking properly, moreover his seizures continued. An MRI scan in Iraq revealed a tumor and a neurosurgeon in Iraq recommended a VP shunt only.
“The thought that every second counts and any delay affect your child’s life is shattering. After we learnt that our child has a tumor we were scared and feared for his life. We consented to the procedure, however despite the same his symptoms persisted. Struggling to keep my family together, I decided to consult the best neurosurgeon in India. Post an online discussion with the hospital I decided to come to Paras Gurgaon for treatment,” shares Saeed.
A consultation with Dr. Mehta post investigations and a specialised MRI scan – Functional MRI highlighted that Mohammad had a serious brain tumor, medically termed as Posterior Fossa SOL.
According to Dr (Prof) VS Mehta, Padmashree, Director Neurosciences, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon, “Posterior Fossa Tumor is a type of brain tumor located in post compartment of brain – it is also considered a critical brain lesion. The posterior fossa is a small space in the skull, found near the brainstem and cerebellum. The cerebellum is the part of the brain responsible for movement, balance, and coordination. The brainstem is responsible for controlling vital body functions, such as breathing heart function. If a tumor grows in the area of the posterior fossa, it can block the flow of spinal fluid and cause increased pressure on the brain and spinal cord. The symptoms that 3 yr. old Mohammad was experiencing were typical to this type of tumor – drowsiness, headache, imbalance, nausea, vomiting and in-coordinated walk along with dilated pupils, eye problems, hearing loss and face muscle weakness. Most tumors of the posterior fossa are removed with surgery, even if they are not cancerous. There is limited space in the posterior fossa, and the tumor can easily press on delicate structures if it grows. In Mohammad’s case the tumor has been since 2 years and the situation demanded immediate surgery.”
A complicated microscopic surgery was done. The tumor was reaching the brainstem and thalamus. Using the latest image guided tumor navigation surgery – the technology that provides exceptional precision to the neurosurgeons with live 3D images and brain anatomy images. The same helps the surgeon navigate and ensure better outcomes.
Post-surgery Mohammad is active and conscious. The tumor is removed and he would have to go through physiotherapy for rehabilitation. Saeed and his wife wait to take their son back home. “When we were explained that he has a critical brain tumor, we realized that it was like a bomb that as ticking in his head. We thank our lucky stars that we decided to come to Dr. Mehta for treatment. We are just taking a healthy baby back but the blessings of the Allah in the holy month of Ramadan,” shares Saeed.
