A weak body, severe headache and nausea – this is how Ramawati remembers her earlier days. Battling health issues every day and pushing herself to do the household work, Ramawati was going through one of the most difficult periods of her life. She resorted to over the counter pain medication and head ache pills, but nothing worked for her. Ramawati, a BSF officer’s wife, from Motihari, she decided to consult a specialist in her town to get the right medical advice for her ailment. However the doctor without any tests or investigations put her on high potency medication.
Days became weeks, however, Ramawati continued to suffer from a severe headache and nausea. There was no improvement in her health and in fact, she was deteriorating. Concerned about her situation, Ramawati’s family members decided to take a second opinion and began to ask friends and relatives for advice. Most of their well wishers recommended Paras HMRI Hospital, Bihar’s first super specialty hospital. Post recommendations, they decided to consult Dr. Mukund Prasad, Consultant Neurosurgery, Paras HMRI Hospital, Patna.
According to Dr. Mukund Prasad, “ Ramawati came complaining of a severe headache and nausea. She was in an inebriated state and could not even walk straight. We recommended the routine imaging test – CT Scan. The tests revealed a Meningioma – they are often benign tumors arising from the coverings of the brain and spinal cord. They represent about one-third of all primary brain tumors and occur most frequently in middle-aged women. Meningiomas usually grow slowly and may reach a large size before interfering with the normal functions of the brain. The resulting symptoms depend on the location of the tumor within the brain. A headache and weakness in an arm or leg are the most common symptoms. However, seizures, personality changes, and/or visual problems may also occur.”
He further adds that “ Since the Meningioma was benign – noncancerous and localized, the treatment could be done through surgery. The family could plan the same and today Ramawati post surgery is healthy again.”
According to Dr. Mukund, “Numerous patients that come to us are on later stages of brain tumor, just like Ramawati, they keep on ignoring their signs and symptoms and even when the pain becomes unbearable, instead of consulting a specialist they sometimes go for alternative therapy. Misdiagnosed and post going through a wrong treatment regime, the immunity and the body defense mechanism becomes more tired and vulnerable. It is best that people become aware that early detection and timely treatment is most important to treat any type of cancer.”
The surgery has ensured a ‘No Tumor Life’ for Ramawati and has given her a 100% cure. She can’t thank her stars enough, “I am so lucky that I was recommended the right doctor and hospital so that I could get the right treatment and care. So many people suffer the perils of misdiagnosis. I am really thankful to Dr. Mukund for ensuring that I become healthy again. Thank you, Doctor!”
