They say that some potions give you extra strength and vigour but for 70 yr old Roma Talibudin a spine surgery proved to be a game changer. Struggling with severe back pain and disability for months, Ms Roma thought that her time had come. “At the age of 70, every one expects pain and discomfort. When I feel down one morning, I literally heard my back bone snap. The sound was a warning of the pain I was to endure. For 6 months I was on bed, unable to walk and do normal day to day activities.”
Despite taking numerous over the counter medication and consulting top doctors, Roma got no relief. Being a local resident of Saharanpur was another deterrent. “You have no specialised doctors and god hospitals there. For any kind of specialised treatment you have to come to the Delhi NCR region. My cousin suggested Dr Arun Bhanot of Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon. He shared that he had over the years witnessed numerous success cases of the doctor and that the hospital provides affordable medical care for the middle class. Being assured about the best doctor and the aspect of affordability, we decided to come to Gurgaon, “ shares Roma.
According to Dr. Arun Bhanot, Chief of Spine Services, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon, “Roma’s condition was complicated. Her CT and MRI scans highlighted that her spine was under considerable strain. Post a fall, she had fractured her spine at the junction of the thoracic and lumbar region. This was causing severe pain to her . She was diagnosed with D12-L1 Fracture with Anderson and Akylosing Spondylitis. This condition can be reversed only through a surgery.”
He adds,“We recommended the latest posterior instrumentation and fusion with bone graft procedure through the key hole surgery. Through this advancement, complex spine surgeries can be done laparoscopically. You don’t need to make the patient go through a complex open surgery, instead the same can be done through small incisions. This is a scar less procedure and ensures that the recovery of the patient is fast and complication free.”
Post surgery and few weeks of rehabilitation, today Roma is healthy. She is fit to move and is capable to do her daily activities. Roma shares “At any age every human being aspires to be independent”. Thanks to the surgery and the competent guidance of Dr. Arun Bhanot, today I am not a burden on my family. The surgery was state of the art, and I couldn’t believe that I didn’t have to worry about the stitches! Thanks to Dr. Bhanot, I feel like an iron lady today.”
